PETITION TOWARD RELOCATION OF MARINE RESIDENCE TOWERS

To:
UBC Board of Governors;
UBC Properties Trust;
The Greater Vancouver Regional District Board;
Mayor and City Council of Vancouver;
Mayor and City Council of Richmond;
Legislative Assembly of British Columbia, and Members of Parliament, Canada

From:
Concerned UBC Students;
Concerned Members of the UBC AMS;
Neighbours of UBC (NUBC);
Concerned Members of St. John’s College;
Pacific Spirit Park Society (PSPS);
the Society for Promotion of Environmental Conservation (SPEC);
Friends and Members of the Wreck Beach Preservation Society (WBPS),
as well as Users of and Visitors to the Point Grey Foreshore,
and the University Endowment Lands Tenants’ Association (UELTA).

Begun: April 22, 2004

Whereas no environmental impact assessment has been conducted with regard to adjacent Pacific Spirit Regional Park lands across from the proposed towers, and an existing and potential slide area lies just to the north of the site;

Whereas UBC says that housing should show “due regard for adjacent land uses,” and students, the public and surrounding communities were not consulted;

Whereas UBC is failing to comply with their agreement to “respect views of the beach and sea from the cliff tops and vice versa;”

Whereas these towers in this location would cause inalterable damage to the last unobstructed viewscapes, free of artificial lighting, of forested cliffs by the sea in Vancouver;

Whereas the Point Grey escarpment lies in the Pacific Migratory Fly-Way, and the night lighting and glass windows of these towers would be a fatal lure to migratory and residential birds;

We, the undersigned, without prejudice, do humbly pray and petition UBC’s Board of Governors and all parties listed above to:
(1) Cease construction and any site preparation on this site until the towers can be relocated and their impacts mitigated satisfactorily by consultation with student and stakeholder communities;
(2) Undertake consultation with student and stakeholder communities relating to site , design, and ecological and cultural impacts;
(3) Ensure that a full, independent environmental impact assessment is conducted with regard to adjacent parkland allowing for an adequate buffer zone.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned
