Keep Motorized Vehicles Out of Cranberry Backcountry

We the undersigned hereby object to the opening of Forest Service Road 76 (Cranberry Backcountry Road) to vehicular traffic on October 19 and October 26, 2003, and petition the United States Forest Service (USFS) to ensure that FS 76 and all other Management Prescription (MP) 6.2 Areas remain closed to such traffic as prescribed in the Forest Plan for the Monongahela National Forest (MNF). We also object in the strongest possible terms to the authority of the District Ranger of the Gauley Ranger District to unilaterally and blatantly disregard the Forest Plan in respect to the MP 6.2 Cranberry Backcountry Area by opening said FS 76 to public vehicular traffic on October 19 and October 26, 2003, with little or no prior public notice and without allowing stakeholders an opportunity to voice objection. Like many parts of the MNF, the Cranberry Backcountry represents a unique and fragile ecosystem which could be harmed by excessive vehicular traffic; thus its MP 6.2 (Backcountry) designation. To allow even limited vehicular traffic beyond what is permitted by the MP 6.2 designation could endanger critical components of the Backcountry ecosystem. Furthermore, ignoring the guidelines of the MP 6.2 designation ignores the wishes of thousands of recreational users who annually enjoy the Backcountry because of the absence of vehicular traffic.
