Resume Zyflo production |
To: Abbott PharmaceuticalsAbbott Pharmaceuticals has decided to cease production of Zyflo™ (generic name: zileuton) Their reasoning is that alternates such as Singulair™ and Accolate™ are easier to take, more commonly prescribed, and do not carry the requirement of liver LFT level screening. However, Zyflo functions differently from Singulair and Accolate, in that it inhibits the production of 5-lipoxygenase, as opposed to antagonizing leukotrienes at the receptor. Zyflo is currently the only drug on the market which acts as a 5-LO inhibitor, and its benefit to patients with aspirin-sensitive asthma and nasal polyps (Samter's Triad) is leagues above the benefit of leukotriene antagonists. Zyflo has additionally shown promise in reducing the growth of pancreatic cancers, arthritis, and colitis.
We want Abbott to continue production of Zyflo, even in limited quantities. The drug allows many of us to avoid the use of systemic steroids to reduce polyp tissue and restore smell, and as such, its absense from the market is a tremendous risk to our health.
Sincerely,Sincerely,
